The phrases that flow today
In a café you have two warm, polite phrases: "Can I have a coffee, please?" and "I'd like a sandwich, please." Say it soft and kind: "I'd like…" Tom is at a café. The waiter asks, "What would you like?" Tom says, "I'd like a sandwich and a tea, please." The waiter asks, "For here, or to go?" — "For here, please." Mia smiles: "Can I have a coffee and a cake?" The cake comes, and Mia says, "It's delicious!" Yum. When you finish, you say, "Thank you! It was delicious." Now you — are you hungry? Say it out loud: "I'd like a…, please."
Your key phrases
- I'd like… / Can I have…? — polite ways to order. I'd like a coffee, please.
- What would you like? — the waiter asks you. What would you like today?
- a sandwich, a coffee, a cake, water — common café food and drinks. A sandwich and a tea, please.
- For here, or to go? — eat here, or take it with you? For here, please.

The story
Tom and Mia are at a café, and Tom's stomach goes grrr — so hungry! The waiter comes: "What would you like?" "I'd like a sandwich and a tea, please." But — oh no — "No sandwiches today!" Tom's face falls. Then Mia grins: "Can I have two cakes, please — one for Tom!" The cakes come, warm and sweet. Tom takes a bite. "Mmm… it's delicious!" Big smile. Thank you, Mia!

Big smile! Sit up, breathe deeply. Ready? Answer out loud — your turn!
Q. Tom and Mia are at a café. Tom is hungry. Are they at a café? A. Yes! They're at a café.
Q. Is Tom hungry, or full? A. Hungry! Tom is hungry.
Q. The waiter asks, "What would you like?" Does Tom order a sandwich, or a cake? A. A sandwich! And a tea.
Q. Now the problem — the waiter says, "No sandwiches today!" Are there sandwiches, or no sandwiches? A. No sandwiches! None today.
Q. Then Mia smiles: "Can I have two cakes, please — one for Tom!" Does Tom try the cake? A. Yes! And it's delicious.
Q. "Mmm, it's delicious!" Is Tom sad now, or happy? A. Happy! Thank you, Mia!

Now: Tom and Mia are at a café. Tom is hungry. The waiter asks, "What would you like?" Tom orders a sandwich and a tea. But oh no — the waiter says, "No sandwiches today!" Then Mia smiles, "Can I have two cakes — one for Tom!" Tom tries the cake. He says, "Mmm, it's delicious!" Now Tom is happy.
Before: Yesterday, Tom and Mia were at a café. Tom was hungry. The waiter asked, "What would you like?" Tom ordered a sandwich and a tea. But oh no — the waiter said, "No sandwiches today!" Then Mia smiled, "Can I have two cakes — one for Tom!" Tom tried the cake. He said, "Mmm, it's delicious!" Tom was happy.
A common mistake
Warm and polite always wins. Say the whole kind phrase: I'd like a sandwich, please. Can I have a coffee, please? That little please and a big smile open every door. Say it soft, say it kind, again and again.
Say it out loud
- Order out loud: "I'd like a…, please."
- Ask politely: "Can I have a coffee, please?"
- Taste something today and say: "It's delicious!"
