By the end of this guide, you'll feel the difference between sheep and ship, you'll know where to put your tongue for the TH, and you'll hear eat and it as two different words — out loud, with me.
Some English sounds don't exist in your language. That's not a problem — it's just new. You're going to feel these three with your mouth, not study them. Say every example out loud. Don't worry about perfect. Worry about warm and brave. Big smile — let's go!
sheep or ship? The long and the short
These two words look almost the same, but the sound in the middle is different. One is long and bright, the other is short and quick.
- sheep 🐑 — stretch it: sheeeep. Smile wide, like you're showing your teeth in a photo. The sound is long.
- ship 🚢 — short and relaxed: ship. Quick. Your mouth is softer, looser.
Say them together, slowly: sheep… ship… sheep… ship. Feel your smile open for sheep and relax for ship. Now a few friends in the same family:
- eat (long) / it (short) — I eat it.
- green (long) / — keep it long and bright.
- this (short) / these (long) — this is quick, these is long.
A little game: say "I see the sheep on the ship." Long, short, long, short. Say it three times, a little faster each time. That's your mouth learning.
eat or it? — almost the same, but not 👂
Let's stay with this pair, because it matters every day. Eat is long and bright — your mouth smiles. It is short and easy — your mouth relaxes.
- eat — I want to eat. Stretch it: eeeat.
- it — I like it. Short and soft: it.
Now feel the difference in a real sentence: "I eat it." First long, then short. Say it again: I… eat… it. Beautiful. You just made two sounds that many beginners blur into one. Your ears will thank you, because now you'll hear the difference when a native speaks fast.
The TH sound — the one that doesn't exist in your language 👅
Here's the famous one. The trick is simple and a little funny: your tongue goes between your teeth. Just the soft tip. Then you blow air past it. That's it.
- Put the tip of your tongue gently between your teeth.
- Now say: think… thank… three. Feel the air on your tongue.
- And the soft, buzzy version: this… that… the… mother. Same tongue, but now it gently buzzes.
Try these out loud, slowly:
- Thank you. — tongue out for the th, then smile.
- This is my mother. — two soft th sounds, warm and easy.
- I think so. — tongue between your teeth for think.
It feels strange the first time. Good! Strange means new. Say "Thank you, this is my mother" five times, and by the fifth time your tongue already knows where to go.
Now — your turn
Quick check, out loud. Q. Which one is long and bright — sheep or ship? … A. Sheep! Long and bright, with a big smile. And ship is short and relaxed.
One last thing, and it's the most important: don't aim for perfect. Aim for brave. Real people understand you long before your accent is "perfect" — and the only way your mouth learns these sounds is by saying them out loud, again and again, with a smile. So keep playing. Say sheep, ship, eat, it, think, this in the mirror tomorrow morning. That's how the sounds become yours.
