The phrases that flow today
When you meet a new person, what do you say? You say, "Hi! Nice to meet you." It's friendly. It's easy. Let's meet Tom. Tom is at a party. He sees a new person. Her name is Mia. Tom smiles and says, "Hi, I'm Tom. Nice to meet you." Mia smiles too. She says, "Hi, Tom. I'm Mia. Nice to meet you too." Then Tom asks, "Where are you from?" Mia says, "I'm from Brazil. And you?" — "I'm from Canada." Now they are friends. See? It's simple. Hi. I'm… Nice to meet you. Where are you from? Say it with energy. Smile when you say it!
Your key phrases
- Hi / Hello — your warm first word to anyone. Hi! Hello there!
- I'm… / My name is… — two ways to give your name. I'm Tom. My name is Mia.
- Nice to meet you — you say this the first time you meet a person. Hi! Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you too — your warm answer back. Nice to meet you too!
- Where are you from? — you ask about someone's country or city. Where are you from?
- I'm from… — your answer. I'm from Brazil.
- This is my friend… — you bring another person in. This is my friend, Ana.

The story
Tom is at a party. The music is loud, and his heart goes boom, boom — he's a little shy. Then he sees Mia. He breathes. He smiles. "Hi, I'm Tom. Nice to meet you." Mia smiles back: "Nice to meet you too! I'm Mia." "Where are you from, Mia?" "I'm from Brazil!" Two strangers. One little phrase. Now — two friends.
Mini-story — listen and answer
Big smile! Sit up, breathe deeply. Ready? Answer out loud — your turn!
Q. This is Tom. Tom is at a party. Is Tom at a party, or at home? A. A party! Tom is at a party.
Q. Tom's heart goes boom, boom — he is shy. Is Tom shy, or brave? A. Shy! Tom is a little shy.
Q. Then Tom sees a new person. Her name is Mia. Who does Tom see — Mia, or Lucy? A. Mia! Tom sees Mia.
Q. Oh — a problem! Tom is too shy to speak. Does Tom speak, or stay quiet? A. Quiet! Tom is too shy. He says nothing.
Q. But then Tom breathes, he smiles, and he says it! What does Tom say? A. "Hi, I'm Tom. Nice to meet you!"
Q. Mia smiles big. Is Mia happy, or angry? A. Happy! Mia is happy. "Nice to meet you too!"
Q. Tom asks where she's from. Is Mia from Brazil, or from Canada? A. Brazil! Mia is from Brazil. And now — two friends!
The same moment — now and before
Now: Tom is at a party. His heart goes boom, boom. He sees Mia. He is shy, but he smiles and says, "Hi, I'm Tom. Nice to meet you." Mia smiles and says, "Nice to meet you too!" Now they are friends.
Before: Last night, Tom was at a party. His heart went boom, boom. He saw Mia. He was shy, but he smiled and said, "Hi, I'm Tom. Nice to meet you." Mia smiled and said, "Nice to meet you too!" And they were friends.
A common mistake
Beginners freeze and try to say a long, perfect sentence. Don't! Just say the small phrase you know: Hi. I'm… Nice to meet you. Short and warm beats long and perfect, every time.
Say it out loud
- Look in the mirror, smile, and say: "Hi, I'm… Nice to meet you."
- Ask the question out loud: "Where are you from?"
- Answer it: "I'm from…"
