Hi! Welcome back. Big smile — let's go! Look around you, right now. Things! So many things — a cup, a phone, a door, a window. Today you'll learn to name them, and to say where they are. Close to you, or far away. Listen, and let the words flow.
The phrases that flow today
Let's name them together. This is a cup. Point to it. This is a phone. This is a door. When a thing is close — near your hand — you say "this". When a thing is far — over there — you say "that". That is a door. That is a window. Mia holds her cup. "This is my cup," she says. She points across the room. "That is the door." Where is the cup? Here. The cup is here. Where is the door? Over there. Tom looks for his keys. "Where are my keys?" He looks here, he looks there. And… "Here they are!" This is your world — in English.
Your key phrases
- This is a… — you point to a thing close to you. This is a cup. This is a phone.
- That is a… — you point to a thing far from you. That is a door. That is a car.
- Where is…? / Where are…? — you ask about a place. Where is the cup? Where are my keys?
- Here — near me, right by my hand. The cup is here. Here they are!
- There / over there — far from me, across the room. The door is over there.
- It's… — a short, friendly way to say it. It's a cup. It's here.

The story
Mia has a small, red cup, and she loves it. "This is my cup," she says, and she holds it close. But she sets it down, and — poof — it's gone! "Where is my cup?" She looks here. She looks there. Then Tom points across the room: "It's over there!" And there it is. Big smile — Mia is happy again.

Q. Where is the cup — here, or over there? A. Over there! And now Mia is happy. There it is!

Now: Mia has a small, red cup, and she loves it. But oh no — the red cup is gone! The cup is not here. Mia looks here, Mia looks there. She is worried. Then Tom points. He says, "It's over there!" And there it is — now Mia is happy.

A common mistake
Don't stop to think — just point and feel it. Point near you — this is a cup. Point far away — that is a door. Point near, this. Point far, that. Say it as you point, again and again, until it flows.
Say it out loud
- Point to a thing near you and say it: "This is a…"
- Point to a thing far away: "That is a…"
- Lose something on purpose, then say: "Where is it?… Here it is!"
