By the end of this lesson, you can ask how someone feels and say how you feel today.

Hi! Welcome back. Big smile — let's go! How are you today? Are you happy? Are you tired? Today we learn feelings — the small, warm phrases you use every single day. Listen, and let them flow.

The phrases that flow today

"How are you?" — you ask this to a friend. The answer is easy: "I'm fine." "I'm good." "I'm happy." "I'm…" is a short, friendly way to talk about you. "I'm tired." "I'm hungry." Say it with me. Tom works all day. Now Tom is tired — "I'm tired." And he's hungry too — "I'm hungry!" Mia sees him. "Hi, Tom! How are you?" Tom says, "I'm tired and hungry. How are you?" Mia says, "I'm great! I'm happy today." Happy. Sad. Tired. Hungry. Good. These are feelings. "He is tired. She is happy." How are you right now? Say it big: "I'm happy!"

Your key phrases

  • How are you? — you ask a friend about their feelings. Hi! How are you today?
  • I'm fine / good / great — warm, friendly answers. I'm fine, thank you. I'm great!
  • happy / sad — two big feelings. I'm happy. He is sad.
  • tired — you need to rest. I'm so tired.
  • hungry — you need food. I'm hungry. Let's eat!
  • He is… / She is… — you tell how someone else feels. He is tired. She is happy.

Listen to this set out loud every day for one week. Slower is fine. Deep learning.

The story

Tom works all day — tap, tap, tap on his computer. When the sun goes down, Tom is so tired. And his stomach goes grrr — he's hungry too! He looks in the kitchen. Empty. No food! Oh no. Then — knock, knock — it's Mia, with a hot pizza and a big smile. "How are you, Tom?" Tom eats, and now? Not tired, not hungry. Just happy.

Mini-story — listen and answer

Big smile! Sit up, breathe deeply. Ready? Answer out loud — your turn!

Q. This is Tom. Tom works all day. Now is Tom tired, or happy? A. Tired! Tom is very tired.

Q. Is Tom a little tired, or very tired? A. Very tired! Tom is very tired.

Q. And there's a problem — Tom is hungry too, but the kitchen is empty. Is there food, or no food? A. No food! The kitchen is empty.

Q. Then Mia comes and asks, "Tom, how are you?" Who comes — Mia, or Lucy? A. Mia! Mia comes.

Q. Mia smiles. "I have pizza!" Does Mia have pizza, or soup? A. Pizza! Mia has pizza.

Q. Now Tom eats the pizza. Is Tom hungry now, or happy? A. Happy! Tom is not tired, not hungry — Tom is happy. Thank you, Mia!

The same moment — now and before

Now: Tom works all day. Now Tom is very tired, and he is hungry too. But the kitchen is empty — there is no food! Then Mia comes and asks, "How are you?" Tom says, "I'm tired and hungry." Mia smiles. She has pizza! Tom eats the pizza, and now Tom is happy.

Before: Yesterday, Tom worked all day. Tom was very tired, and he was hungry too. But the kitchen was empty — there was no food! Then Mia came and asked, "How are you?" Tom said, "I'm tired and hungry." Mia smiled. She had pizza! Tom ate the pizza, and Tom was happy.

A common mistake

Beginners answer "How are you?" with "Yes." It's not a yes/no question — say a feeling: I'm fine. I'm good. I'm tired.

Say it out loud

  • Ask a friend (or the mirror): "How are you?"
  • Answer out loud, big smile: "I'm good! I'm happy!"
  • Tell how someone else feels: "He is tired. She is happy."

Your 7-day challenge
